Everyone can appreciate water for all the advantages that come along with its presence. However, it can also bring about disadvantages like increased expenses due to damages in the home. When water is contained in its proper location and space, it serves as a very useful element. This is true for chores and other matters like personal hygiene. Water can also be used as an accent or focal point in a residential space. In order for this element to remain useful to home owners, certain steps must be taken in order for it not to seep through potential areas and devices that water can destroy.

It is the responsibility of each home owner to know where the main water shutoff valve is located. When there is an emergency, it pays off to know how and where the solution is. Test the valve regularly to ensure that it is working properly. When you are trying to fill up the bathtub or kitchen sink, you must remain within the vicinity. This habit saves water and prevents other accidents from happening. Never turn on and set the time for dishwasher when the no one can check it, an example of this is during bed time. Should there be a ruptured hose, it will cause water to stream the entire night destroying furniture and other appliances.

Regular checks must be done on several appliances that are constantly touched by water. Some of these are the sink, icemaker, dishwasher and garbage disposal. If there are leaks present in any of them, repairs must be scheduled immediately. Also, bear in mind to replace hoses after 5 years of use. Open the basement floor so that water can pass freely and quickly.

Most heaters last for a very long time, usually about 10 to 15 years. Though, occasionally, repairs might be needed on some. Wet spots on the floor or the appearance of rust on the tank mean that heaters need to be inspected and possibly need to be fixed. Well insulated and ventilated pipes, during winter, do not burst because ice dams cannot form. Remember to keep the fresh air flowing in those areas.

Water must be prevented from entering the foundation of the house. That is why your downspouts must always be located several feet away from the house. One way of improving drainage is to keep gutters, valleys, downspouts and the roof free of debris. These may be in the form of dried twigs, leaves, or other litter. Schedule a roof inspection during spring time so that damages that were incurred during winter time can be repaired. An example of this one can be loose shingles. It is also advisable to turn off your main water source when the family goes on vacation. V:7
